Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 14, 2003) - In the first round of the JBU Women’s Basketball Classic, the Golden Eagles overcame a slow start and finished strong to defeat the Pilots of LSU-Shreveport 73-52 on Friday evening. Leading only 31-30 at the intermission, JBU upped their offensive attack in the second period with sophomore Kendra McCormick and freshman Ashley Wettengel leading the way. During that second period run by JBU, the Pilots were held scoreless for a 4-minute span that contributed to the point spread between the two squads. McCormick led all scorers with 20 points for the game and Wettengel tossed in 16 to aid the winning effort. Senior Bethany Sites pulled down several key rebounds and was the leading rebounder for JBU with 6 for the night and also led the team in assists with 4. A solid bench performance headed by junior Caitlin Chandler’s 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots along with freshman Jordyn West’s 3 rebounds and 3 blocked shots kept the Pilots off balance throughout the night.
“We executed on offense much better in the 2nd half and the defense stiffened and made them take more difficult shots,” stated Assistant Coach Von Eshnaur following the win. “Our half court offense did a great job getting the ball inside and gave us a better look at the basket.”
In the opening game of the Classic, College of the Ozarks defeated Bethel College of Kansas 72-61. Katie Howard led C of O with 22 points and Shelly Haug had 18 for Bethel.
Action in the JBU Women’s Basketball Classic continues on Saturday with LSU-Shreveport taking on College of the Ozarks at 1:00 pm followed by JBU and Bethel College at 3:00 pm.
