JBU Volleyball Drops Two Conference Matches

Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 24, 2003) — Starting the action in their own Blue and Gold Invitational, John Brown University fell to Lubbock Christian University 3-0. The Golden Eagles hung tightly with the visitors through the midway point of each game before the Chaps took control and bested JBU 30-22, 30-21 and 30-21 in three games. Lubbock Christian leads the Sooner Athletic Conference now with a 6-0 record compared to JBU’s 3rd place position with a record of 1-3.

Senior Christine Matchell led the way offensively for the Golden Eagles with 10 kills, while frosh Rachel Melby contributed 17 assists. Defensively, junior Meghann Wharton with 2 blocks and sophomore Christine Wells with 22 digs were the standouts for JBU.

In their second SAC match of the day, the Golden Eagles lost 3-1 to Wayland Baptist University. After losses in the first two games, 25-30 and 16-30, JBU fought back to capture the third game 30-28 and then was defeated 18-30 in the final game of the match.

Senior Kemi Rogers led the attack for the Golden Eagles against Wayland Baptist with 6 kills while senior Jairin Schrader slammed in 3 service aces and Melby contributed 14 assists. Wells once again topped the dig list with 17 and Wharton was the leader in blocks with 3.

In other action Friday in the Blue and Gold Invitational, Wayland Baptist defeated William Jewell College in 3 straight, 30-28, 30-27 and 30-20. Lubbock Christian handed Evangel University a loss by the scores of 30-16, 30-22 and 30-25 and in the final match of the day, Evangel came back to defeat William Jewell 30-14, 30-28 and 30-20.

With the double loss today, JBU drops to 1-4 in league play and to 18-11 overall. Play will continue on Saturday in the Blue and Gold Invitational with 4 games. JBU will lead off at 10 am against William Jewell and come back at 4 pm to play Evangel University.
