JBU SIFE Captures Honors At Nat. Free Enterprise Competition

Siloam Springs, Ark (May 17, 2002) — A group of enterprising college students from John Brown University received national honors at the 2002 Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) USA National Exposition, sponsored by the Kansas City Business Community, May 12-14 in Missouri.

The JBU SIFE Team was awarded a trophy for Semi-Final 2nd Runner-Up in the 2002 USA National Exposition and received a $750 scholarship for future SIFE projects. JBU SIFE was also named as one of 15 National Finalists in the Teach A Child About Business Competition for projects related to their annual World Trade Expo, in which middle school students from northwest Arkansas learn free enterprise by planning and implementing their own businesses.

In the national SIFE competition, the John Brown University SIFE Team competed against more than 150 teams from around the country. To qualify for the national competition, each team competed and won at one of twenty-one regional competitions. The JBU SIFE Team was named Regional Champion at the Memphis, Tennessee SIFE Regional Competition held in April 2002.

During national competition, SIFE Teams presented 24-minute multi-media summaries of the educational outreach projects they developed and implemented throughout the year. They were judged by panels drawn from more than 750 of the nation’s top business and community leaders. The SIFE USA National Champion in the 4-year division will compete at the SIFE World Cup 2002 in Amsterdam, September 22-24, 2002.

JBU professor Joe F. Walenciak served as advisor for the JBU SIFE Team. Joe Walenciak was named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow in recognition of his leadership and support of the SIFE program at John Brown University. “It has been an privilege to work with this group of young people and get caught up in their passion to make a difference in the community and the world,” he said.
