Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 21, 2003) - John Brown University took their first Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season by defeating Southern Nazarene University in three straight games on Tuesday night in Siloam Springs. All three games were closely contested with both teams taking the lead at various points in the games. JBU began to dominate the first game about 2/3 of the way through and came out on top with a 30-23 score. In game two, the score was tied numerous times with the Golden Eagles able to pull away only late in the game to achieve the victory 30-26. Game three saw SNU come out strong in the early stages and it was not until JBU tied the score at 21-21 that the Golden Eagles were able to settle down and pull ahead for the 30-27 win.
Leading the way statistically for the Golden Eagles on offense were sophomore Elisa Evans with 13 kills, frosh Rachel Melby with 24 assists, and freshman Brittany Moon-Battung with 5 service aces. Defensively, Evans led the way with 6 blocks and senior Jairin Schrader collected 17 digs.
“This was a key win because it was a conference game. It helped to solidify our spot in the conference and it was good to get back to our style of play and be able to claim the win in 3 games,” quoted coach Robyn Gordon following the match. “Elisa has really been sharp the last few matches and has come into her own these last couple of weeks.”
JBU ups their conference record to 1-2 and moves to 18-9 overall. The Golden Eagles host the Blue and Gold Invitational this weekend with teams from Missouri and Texas slated to play. JBU game times for the Invitational are 11 am and 5 pm on Friday and 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday.
