Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 20, 2003) - Wheaton College defeated the Golden Eagles 3-1 and then JBU came back to defeat Hendrix College 3-0 in volleyball on Saturday afternoon at Conway, Arkansas. Game scores for the Wheaton match were 13-30, 30-28, 27-30 and 29-31. For the Hendrix match, the scores were30-22, 30-26 and 30-24.
Statistics on the afternoon individually for the Golden Eagles had senior Kemi Rogers with 24 kills, 28 digs, and 2 service aces. Sophomore Elisa Evans had 15 blocks and 2 service aces while frosh Rachel Melby had 56 assists.
Coach Robyn Gordon had this to say about the matches. “We came out flat against Wheaton in game one, but did recover somewhat in the second game. Games three and four were close until the end. Playing without our leading hitter, junior Meghann Wharton and leading back row player senior Christine Wells, who were out with injuries, had some impact on the way we played. I have to give credit to Wheaton who made the big plays when it counted. Our ball control was much better against Hendrix and we just had more power that they. Kemi and Elisa both had great afternoons and freshman Brittany Moon-Battung stepped up her level of play with some outstanding hits.”
After Saturday’s action, John Brown University volleyball is 17-9 for the season.
JBU returns home Tuesday evening for a Sooner Athletic Conference match with Southern Nazarene University at 7 pm. Then on Friday and Saturday of this week, the Golden Eagles host the Blue and Gold Invitational with competing teams from William Jewell College, Evangel University, Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University. Games start at 11 am on Friday and 10 am on Saturday.
