JBU Volleyball Wins 3-2 over College of the Ozarks

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 30, 2003) — After falling behind 0-2 in games, the Golden Eagles came back to take 3 straight from the Lady Cats to capture a 3-2 victory on Tuesday evening in Murray Sells Athletic Center on the JBU campus. College of the Ozarks took the first two games by identical scores of 30-27 before JBU broke into the win column in game 3 at 31-29. The fourth game was a tightly matched contest as had been the first three and the Golden Eagles wrestled away a 30-28 win to take the match to the fifth game. The Golden Eagles took command early in the last game and never let up to notch the victory at 15-10.

Individually for JBU, sophomore Elisa Evans, with 15 kills, led the way for the offense while senior Christine Matchell recorded 11 kills. Frosh Rachel Melby continues to lead the team in assists with 31 for the evening. Melby and junior Helen Gross each scored 3 service aces to help in the victory. On the defensive side, senior Jairin Schrader’s 31 digs and Evan’s 10 blocks led the statistical chart.

“Our main problem in the first two games tonight was that our passing was off. Near the end of game two, our passing improved, but we were not able to overcome the lead they had on us. In game 3, the passing game became more solid and the senior leadership of Christine Matchell allowed us to turn the match around and gain the momentum we needed to go on for the win,” commented coach Robyn Gordon following the match. “This was a big win without our leading hitter, Meghann Wharton. We needed to see the effort of our week of hard practice pay off in a victory.”

The Golden Eagles are now 14-7 and will travel to Texas this weekend for matches with UT-Permian Basin and College of the Southwest.
