(September 11, 2003) - (Springdale-AP) -- Bernice Young Jones, philanthropist and widow of the late trucking magnate Harvey Jones, died Wednesday at her home. She was 97. Jones was awarded the Presidential Citizen Medal in 1996 by then-President Bill Clinton. She was founder of a community services, health, education and recreation center in Springdale and donated millions of dollars to educational and health institutions throughout her life. Her husband, Harvey Jones, built Jones Truck Lines, once one of the largest trucking companies in the country. He was also a generous contributor to charitable organizations. He died in 1989. After new owners closed down Jones Truck Lines in 1991, Jones bought the property back and transformed it into the home of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Center for Families. The center opened in 1995.
