John Brown University Classic Opens Volleyball Campaign
Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 29, 2003) - The Golden Eagles of John Brown University began the 2003 volleyball season with a victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan University 3-0 in the Annual JBU Classic. JBU”s wins of 30-20, 30-26 and 30-20 were sparked by the strong offensive play of junior Meghann Wharton who led the way with 10 kills and freshman Rachel Melby who had 17 assists. Wharton, senior Jairin Schrader and freshman Brittany Moon-Battung each contributed 2 service aces to the winning cause. In addition to sophomore Christine Wells’ 15 digs, Wharton was also instrumental in the defensive play of the Golden Eagles as she recorded 6 blocks.
After dropping behind 2 games to 1 in second round action, JBU came back to win two straight games to defeat College of the Ozarks 3-2. JBU took the first game 30-25 before turning in a couple of sub-par performances in games 2 and 3 while losing 25-30 and 27-30. A fired up team took command early in the 4th game and outscored C of O 30-25 and then took the tiebreaker fifth game 15-5. Senior Kemi Rogers with 13 kills and freshman Rachel Melby with 3 service aces and 22 assists led the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles. On defense, Wells again led the team with 16 digs and sophomore Elisa Evans had 5 blocks.
In other games of first round action of the classic, which continues on Saturday, Union University of Jackson, TN had wins over Dillard University of New Orleans 30-19, 30-22, 30-15 and College of the Ozarks of Branson, MO 30-18, 30-19 and 30-25. Dillard closed out second round action by defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 3-2 with scores of 22-30, 30-28, 20-30, 30-25, and 16-14.
The second day of the JBU Classic begins at 10:00 am on Saturday with JBU playing Dillard University. Action continues thru the day and JBU will play at 2:00 pm against Union University to conclude classic action.
