Possible compromise on education reform?
(August 8, 2003) — (Monticello-AP) -- While still pitching his education reform ideas, Governor Huckabee sounds more open to possible concessions. He said yesterday he is willing to phase in his proposal to broaden high school curriculums and to consider changes in how the state education system is governed. The two issues have been sticking points in the education reform debate. Senator Jimmy Jeffries says he senses a softening of the governor's position that could encourage talks leading to agreement on education changes. However, Huckabee again raised the possibility of leading a ballot initiative next year if he and the Legislature fail to break a months-long impasse over his proposals. The state is under a state Supreme Court order to improve Arkansas' public education system.
