The John Brown University Golden Eagles are heading into the semi final round of the SAC Championship Tournament after beating Lubbock Christian University (Texas) Chaparrals 62-49 on Thursday evening at Bill George Arena.
JBU now holds an overall record of 24-7. LCU finishes their season with a 15-5 overall record.
JBU had four players finish in double digits led by senior Adrian Miller with 18 points. Senior Andy Garcia added 13 followed by junior EJ McWoods with 10. Miller led in assists with five followed by McWoods with three. Garcia grabbed 10 rebounds throughout the game.
LCU’s Rashad Sample led the Chaparrals with 11 points and six assists. Douglas Williams and Anthony Brancato both scored the highest rebounds for LCU with eight followed by Jeff Ayisire with six.
The first half was tough for both offenses as neither could sink their shots. LCU scored first with a field goal by Ayisire, but JBU quickly responded as Miller tied the game. Neither team could find the basket for an entire four and a half minutes, until Sample sank a field goal for LCU. Another two minutes of drought proved both teams came well prepared to play defense. However, JBU poured on the rain with a 11-2 run reaching their highest lead during the first half of seven points. The Golden Eagles reached a seven-point lead three times in the half, yet finally settled with a five-point lead heading into the locker room.
During the second half, LCU tied the game for the third time at 35-35 with a 15-8 run. The game wentback and forth for six minutes resulting in a total of five ties before JBU pulled ahead with a 9-0 run starting at the 5:36 mark. JBU increased their lead to 10 points by the 1:16 mark and after several fouls on LCU, the clock ran out and JBU ended the game with the highest lead of the game of 13 points.
For the game, the Chaparrals won the rebound game 39-33, however the Golden Eagles shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45) while giving up 32.1 percent (18-of-56) to LCU.
The Golden Eagles will play Friday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian in the semi final round of the SAC Tournament hosted at Bill George Arena.
