Golden Eagles out gun Drovers
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 4, 2012) — The 23rd ranked JBU men’s basketball team extended their win streak to six games on Saturday evening after knocking off Science & Arts of Okla. 81-76 on the road.
The win lifts JBU to 19-5 overall and into sole possession of third place in the conference standings with an 11-5 record.
Senior Adrian Miller continued his dominant performance this week with a 20 point 11 rebound double-double effort on Saturday. Junior Coleson Rakestraw added 14, and junior EJ McWoods tossed in 12. Senior Andy Garcia and junior Abel Galliguez added 11 each.
For USAO (12-10, 8-8), Kyle Hunt finished with 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Rumph Norrish added 12.
In a game that saw 13 ties and nine lead changes, the Golden Eagles managed to overcome a nine-point second half deficit to pull out the victory. With 11:45 left in the game, Hunt scored on the inside giving USAO a 60-51 lead. But freshman Max Hopfgartner nailed a big three sparking a 14-5 run to tie things up at 65 with 8:40 left to play. Hopfgartner finished with six points.
After several more lead changes, JBU took over for good with 4:30 left when Garcia hit a free-throw making it 71-70. JBU never looked back from this point and managed to hang on for the five point win.
For the game, JBU shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58), while USAO hit 49.1 percent (26-of-53). JBU got out rebounded 36-34 but managed to do better from the charity stripe by hitting 64.3 percent (18-of-28) compared to 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from USAO.
Up next, the men return to the road to face Oklahoma Christian on Thursday at 8 p.m. before facing Northwestern Okla. State at home next Saturday 5 p.m.
