Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 2, 2012) - The JBU women’s basketball team picked up their first win of the New Year after defeating St. Gregory’s (Okla.) 46-45 at home on Monday night in Bill George Arena.
Sophomore Jessica Berlin’s three pointer as time expired gave the Lady Golden Eagles the one point victory after trailing nearly the entire game. The win moves JBU to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
JBU’s Anna Parish buried a long three to pull within one, 44-43, with seven seconds left after a pair of freethrow makes from SGU's Leticia Silva. JBU immediately fouled on the inbound and sent Silva back to the line where she made the first but missed the second.
With six seconds left, JBU’s Kortni Barenberg grabbed the board and kicked out to Parish, who pushed it up to Berlin. Berlin shot faked and sent a defender flying before swishing the game winner just before the buzzer sounded.
Berlin finished with 13 points and three rebounds. Senior Chelsea Garrison surpassed the 1,000 point career mark after finishing with a game high 14 points and six rebounds.
For SGU (11-1, 4-1 SAC), reigning SAC Player of the Week Jalisa Howard finished with 13 despite sitting for most of the second half in foul trouble. Kalie Lucas added 12 and Kylie Mayes tossed in 11.
Despite only shooting 26.2 percent for the game, the Lady Eagles managed to come away with the win by creating points off turnovers. SGU committed 19 turnovers for the game, while forcing only nine from JBU.
Up next, JBU returns to action on Thursday when Mid-America Christian comes to town. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
