Both John Brown University’s soccer teams posted shutouts against the St. Gregory’s University (Okla.) Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Eagles earned a 5-0 win and the men, a 3-0 victory.
In the women’s game, senior Cam Martin scored the first JBU goal in the first minute of the game after finishing unassisted. JBU scored again almost seven minutes later when junior Cheyenne Padgett found the back of the net. Freshman Casey O’Brien picked up the assist. JBU increased their lead again to 3-0 after freshman Rachel Harris took advantage of a huge breakaway, leaving her one-on-one with SGU’s junior keeper Jennifer Taber. Harris avoided the charging keeper by cutting left to an unpressured, open field tapping the ball into the goal.
In the second half, O’Brien made her own goal at the 48:08 mark, making it her first college career goal ever. Yet again, JBU put it away at the 85:03 mark when freshman Laura Garcia scored assisted by sophomore Alysan Burbacher.
JBU outshot the Lady Cavaliers 20-1 with a 10-0 shots on goal advantage.
In the men’s game, things started off slower than the lady’s game, but in the 26th minute sophomore Luke Theimer put one on the board for JBU. The second goal was also made in the first half by freshman Daniel Forry at the 38:38 mark.
During the second half, both teams struggled to score and began to play rough. JBU finally increased their lead to 3-0 at the 86:07 mark with a clean goal by sophomore Brandon Sikes assisted by junior Misha Kolemasov.
JBU sophomore Pablo Garcia earned the shutout after posting fives saves.
