JBU’s Mejia Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 27, 2001) — John Brown University Golden Eagles junior forward Jahir Mejia added another honor to what has been a tremendous regular season as he was named this week’s Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

It is the second time this season that Mejia has received the honor. For the week the Panama City, Panama native averaged 22.5 points and 7 rebounds per game. Mejia led the Golden Eagles to two huge conference wins over Southern Nazarene University on the road and Oklahoma Christian University in their final home contest of the season. JBU finished the regular season at 18-12 and 9-7 in SAC play climbing into fourth place in the final SAC standings. The Golden Eagles head to Lubbock, Texas this week for the SAC tournament.

Mejia has led the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding all season long, averaging 19.9 points and 8.83 rebounds a game, while shooting a JBU school record 63.9 percent from the floor. He ranks in the top 20 nationally in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage and currently leads the SAC in rebounding and is fourth in scoring and second in field goal percentage.

The junior forward has really turned his game up a notch this season. JBU’s other four starters are all averaging double figures causing opposing defenses match-up problems when trying to key on Mejia. “We challenged Jahir after last season to develop into this caliber of a player. He has matured and developed over the past three seasons into a real force around the basket. With our team balance and good perimeter shooting, Jahir has been able to thrive on one-on-one match-ups in the post. He also runs the floor well and has really improved on his fundamental skills around the basket,” said Golden Eagles coach John Sheehy.

“I feel like Jahir and our team have put individual awards in the back of their mind and focused on team success. Hopefully we can continue to play well and challenge for the conference tournament championship. Over the past couple of seasons our players and programs standards have increased. We are now focusing on our main goal now which is to make the NAIA National Tournament,” said Sheehy. If the Golden Eagles and Mejia continue their play of late that goal is definitely within reach in the not so distant future.
