Siloam Springs, Ark (May 2, 2001) - John Brown University’s chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) returned to campus as Regional Champions from their appearance at the Memphis Regional SIFE Competition on April 4. The team of six students will next present at the national competition to be held in Kansas City, May 13-15.
In Memphis, the team consisting of Jonathan Beckford, Rosie Donado, Kendra Friesen, Eric Henry, Drew Holler and Oleg Meller made a 25-minute presentation to a panel of business leaders who served as judges on the SIFE community activities and projects during the past year. Other students in attendance were Raquel Aburto, Kimbra Nikkel, Mirna Ordonez, Lorena Pardeiro, Angela Parkin, and Debora Ramirez.
SIFE is a nonprofit organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. SIFE challenges students on more than 1000 college campuses nationwide to take what they’re learning in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities. Guided by faculty advisors, SIFE Teams establish a variety of community outreach programs that teach free enterprise.
Dr. Mark Ahlseen, associate professor of business and SIFE faculty advisor at JBU, says the SIFE team is stronger than ever. “We’ve seen quite a bit of growth in the organization, and the energy these students have is amazing. They take this organization seriously and make full use of it to better prepare themselves and to better the community. When these students graduate, they’ll be well prepared to enter the work world. I’m very proud of them.”
JBU’s SIFE team also prepares students for today’s global economy with team members coming from Guatemala, Panama, Belize, Haiti, Russia, Spain, Nicaragua, Bolivia, El Salvador, Mexico and the United States. SIFE members represent various majors, including graphic design, digital media, journalism, engineering, biology, accounting, business administration, and international business.
