Siloam Springs, Ark (February 11, 1998) - After sinking 64 consecutive free throws and leading his team to an upset victory at #9 Oklahoma Baptist, John Brown University men's basketball player Shad Miller was named Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday. The 6-4 senior guard averaged 19 points and 7 rebounds last week in leading JBU to an 81-70 win at OBU and a 100-73 triumph over St. Gregory's College (Okla.).
Miller, a native of Tahlequah, Okla., is currently second in the NAIA with a 93.6 free throw percentage for the 1997-98 season (146 made, 156 attempts). His 18.6 points per game average leads JBU this year.
Miller connected on 64 consecutive free throws over an 11-game span before missing last week against SGC. The 6-4 senior's amazing streak fell 10 short of the NAIA Division I record set by Mike Hall of Adams State (Colo.), who hit 74 straight during a stretch in 1992. Miller equaled the NCAA Division I mark of 64, set by Joe Dykstra of Western Illinois in 1981-82. The NAIA Division II record of 60 consecutive free throws was set by Dan Rough of Whitworth College (Wash.) during the 1996-97 season. JBU is affiliated with NAIA Division I.
Last year, Miller led the nation with a 93.5 free throw percentage while averaging 18.8 points per game. His career free throw percentage at JBU is 89.6. He became the first third-team NAIA All-American in the history of JBU last season.
