Joe Thoma steps down as heads women's soccer coach at JBU.

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 10, 2010) — John Brown University head women’s soccer coach Joe Thoma has announced his resignation after nine seasons at the helm of the Lady Golden Eagle program.

Thoma served as JBU’s first head coach for the women’s soccer program, which had its inaugural season in 2002. He went on to accumulate an overall record of 103-51-4 and guided the team to the NAIA National Tournament in 2005 and again during the 2010 season. He was named Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2009 and was also named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Region VI Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2010. Thoma also guided his teams to SAC regular season conference titles in 2005, 2007, and 2009.

“It is has been an honor to coach such quality young women over the past nine seasons,” said Thoma. “Together we have created a program that has honored the Lord, JBU, and the community. We have been blessed with championships, meeting people all over the world, and most importantly creating a sense of family within our team.”

Prior to taking lead of the women’s soccer program at JBU, Thoma served as the head women’s soccer coach at Indiana Wesleyan from 1999-2001 and was an assistant coach for the JBU men’s soccer program from 1997-1999. He also coached boy’s and girl’s soccer at Fayetteville (Ark.) High School in the early to mid-1990’s.

“We appreciate the foundation that Coach Thoma has built for the women’s soccer program at JBU,” said JBU Director of Athletics Robyn Daugherty. “His teams have done a tremendous job during his tenure, and we thank him for all he has done for our program and wish him the best in the future.”

Thoma will remain on staff with JBU until the end of the 2011 spring semester and plans to pursue new opportunities. The coaching search for his replacement will begin immediately.
