JBU Business Students Place Third at Governor’s Cup
Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 20, 2010) — The John Brown University team “Fore Your Swing” took third place in the undergraduate division at the Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup competition.
Students Natalia Ramirez, Susan Ashley, Brian Urquidez and Melinda Roberts created a company that seeks to provide customers an incomparable golfing experience that fosters both entertainment and quick improvement for golfers in the communities served.
“The students who competed in the Reynolds Governor’s Cup competition are talented young men and women who put forth an incredible amount of time and effort into the development of viable business plans,” said Mike Kennelley, JBU associate professor of business and team advisor. “It is a faculty member’s dream to be able to work with such talented students who understand the value of hard work.”
The award luncheon for the Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup competition was held Monday, April 19 in Little Rock. Each team in the competition is required to complete a business plan that includes a mission, vision, strategy, marketing, financials and investment opportunities for the first five years of business.
Several weeks ago, JBU had four teams named among the top 12 teams in the state competing in the semi-final round. Those teams presented their plans to a panel of judges in Little Rock. Out of the four JBU teams, Fore Your Swing, BetterBetic, and Travel Light Shipping advanced to the final round representing the top six teams in the state.
The fourth team, Roots, was in the running for a $5,000 award for the best Agricultural Business Plan. The Roots team consisted of Bryan Cole, Valerie Braschler, Jodi Knack, & Nadia Soberanis. Roots aids farmers by providing products that assure higher crop yields, minimal losses and sustainable livelihoods.
The BetterBetic team consisted of Cecil (Andrew) Marshall, David Hildenbrand, Danica Schmidt, & Jordan Wright. BetterBetic seeks to create an online diabetes wellness program that helps individuals achieve their nutritional goals through diet planning, meal scheduling, exercise programs, and networking.
Travel Light Shipping is a company devoted to assure a better traveling experience by providing an in-airport mailing service to transport flight-restricted items that would be confiscated by the Transportation Security Administration.
