Women outflown by OC
Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 4, 2010) — The JBU women’s basketball team dropped a 56-50 decision to Oklahoma Christian on Monday night at Murray Sells in Siloam Springs. With the loss, the ladies fall to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the Sooner Athletic conference.
Freshman Jessica Berlin led JBU with 11 points, while junior Emily Ortiz and sophomore Chelsea Garrison finished with nine a piece. Garrison also grabbed nine boards.
OC’s Lisa Chenoweth topped all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Kailan DeCamp added 12.
JBU got off to a very slow start and fell behind by as many as 13 before getting on a roll. Over the final eight minutes of the half, JBU turned the tables and went on a 13-7 run to pull within six, 36-30, heading into the break.
The start of the second period was almost a picture perfect duplicate of the first half as OC (12-2, 5-1) jumped out of the gates and went ahead by 15, 40-25, with 12:41 left in the game.
At the 5:51 mark, JBU cut it back down to double digits, 47-39, after junior Katie Mangels nailed three-pointer. JBU continued to apply pressure and found themselves down four, 52-48, after Ortiz drained a long bomb with 1:48 left.
After several missed opportunities by both teams, Chenoweth gave OC a six point, 54-48, cushion after knocking down a long two with 30 seconds left.
Ortiz quickly came down and answered on the other end, but JBU was forced to foul and send OC to the line where Krista Stevens connected to hold on for the win.
JBU hit 36 percent of their shots on the night, but struggled from deep only hitting 28 percent. OC knocked down 40 percent of their attempts and 36 percent from beyond the arc.
JBU loss the rebounding battle, 33-32, and committed 20 turnovers while forcing 16 from OC.
The ladies return home on Thursday, Jan. 7 to take on conference opponent Mid-America Christian (Okla.) at 6 p.m.
