Bethany, Okla. (December 3, 2009) - The JBU men’s basketball team gave up a 78-55 decision to Southern Nazarene in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Thursday night in the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Okla. With the loss, the men fall to 8-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SAC.
Senior Davaughn Jackson posted 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead all scorers. Freshman Coleson Rakestraw and junior Sam Bartlett each added nine.
For SNU (5-3, 1-0), four players reached double figures led by A.J. Thomas with 19 followed by Xavier Alexander with 16, Deonta Black with 14, and Jon West with 12.
The Eagles found themselves in a hole after falling behind by 11, 30-19, after the first half.
Both teams came out slow in the second half, but JBU picked things up and managed to close the gap to four points, 44-40, after a layup from Andrius Mikutis with 10:58 remaining in the game. Mikutis would finish with six.
SNU regrouped and struck back regaining the momentum and responding with an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 12, 52-40, with 8:20 left.
JBU continued to fight, but SNU answered every attack eventually pulling away to claim the 23 point win.
“We played a good team tonight. They did to us what we usually do to other teams,” said head coach Clark Sheehy. “Even though it’s early we’ve got to have a sense of urgency. We’ll get better."
Overall, JBU shot 32.3% (19-59) and 17% (4-23) from beyond the arc. SNU, meanwhile, knocked down 49% (25-51) including 35.3% (6-17) from three point land.
Turnovers were 17-13 in favor of SNU, but the rebounding edge went to JBU, 39-37.
The men will return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Chickasha, Okla. to face Science and Arts of Okla. for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
