Bethany, Okla. (December 3, 2009) - The JBU women’s basketball team fell 65-54 in Sooner Athletic Conference action to Southern Nazarene on Thursday night in the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Okla. The loss moves JBU to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Junior Katie Mangels dropped in 12 points and grabbed four boards to lead JBU for a second straight game. Junior Ashley Taylor finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Chelsea Garrison added six points to go along with 10 caroms.
SNU (7-2, 1-0) had four reach double digits led by Logan Martin with 16.
JBU controlled the tempo for the first half and held a 23-20 advantage heading into the break.
The Eagles had a hot start to open the second period and found themselves ahead 10, 39-29, with 13:57 left in the game.
SNU would use the next few minutes to quickly claw their way back into it before taking the lead with less than 10 minutes left in the contest.
JBU’s woes continued down the stretch as SNU capitalized and pushed their lead to as many as 14 before claiming the 11 point win. JBU was outscored 45-31 in the second half.
“In the second half, we gave up too many offensive rebounds and couldn’t score,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “We weren’t crashing the boards and didn’t execute very well.”
Overall, the Eagles shot 29.9 % (20-67) from the floor and a dismal 26.1 % (6-23) from three point territory. The Storm also had a rough shooting night canning only 34.4 % (22-64) of their attempts including 21.4 % (3-14) from long range.
The difference maker came at the foul line where SNU knocked down 18-of-23 attempts for 78.3% compared to JBU who only completed 8-of-9 attempts for 89 %.
JBU won the rebounding edge 47-45, but turned the ball over 22 times while forcing only 15.
