Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 24, 2009) - It looked like a three point shooting exhibition on Tuesday night as the JBU women’s team beat Rogers State (Okla.) 75-67 in Sooner Athletic Conference action. The win lifts JBU to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC.
Junior Katie Mangels had a big night for JBU and finished with 19 points after going 7-of-9 from the floor including a perfect 5-of-5 from long range. Freshman Jessica Berlin was close behind with 17 of her own after a 6-for-8 shooting night, which included nailing 5-of-7 from downtown. Chelsea Garrison and Ashley Taylor rounded out the double digit scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively.
For RSU (5-1, 0-1), Hunter Peterson tossed in 22 points to lead all scorers.
JBU controlled the momentum from the tip and used a strong first half to go ahead by 14, 35-21, heading into the break.
In the second half, JBU continued to knock down shots, but Rogers State wasn’t done as they managed to pull within five, 70-65, with :47 seconds left after several turnovers by JBU. But it was too little too late as the Lady Eagles managed to hold on for the win.
Overall, JBU shot 51 percent (28-55) from the floor including 62 percent (13-21) from three point territory. RSU, meanwhile, shot 43 percent (21-49) and 50 percent (7-14) from trey land. The rebounding margin went to RSU, 34-29, but JBU only committed 20 turnovers to RSU’s 23.
The ladies will have the remainder of the week off and look ahead to conference foe Southern Nazarene on Thursday, Dec. 3 in Bethany, Okla. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
