Men's soccer duels to tie
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 14, 2009) — It was a hard fought match between John Brown University and Rogers State (Okla.) on Wednesday evening. After 120 minutes of action neither team gave up an inch, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. JBU moves to 8-5-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in the SAC.
RSU (11-2-1, 3-1-1) scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute when Henrique Sousa broke down several defenders before finishing off with the opening goal. RSU held JBU scoreless the rest of the first half.
In the second period, RSU managed to keep JBU out of striking distance until Josh Baldwin out ran several defenders to a free ball before blasting a hanging curve from about 30 yards out to tie things up in the 58th. It was Baldwin’s fifth goal of the year.
Both teams continued to trade blows the rest of the way, but neither could get the advantage ending the game in a tie.
JBU outshot RSU 20-13 with a 6-4 shots on goal advantage.
Ryan Helmer picked up three saves for JBU, while Nikola Samac had five saves for RSU.
JBU will return to the field on Saturday at home against Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m.
