Bethany, Okla. (September 29, 2009) - The game seemed headed to overtime on Tuesday night in Bethany, Okla., but a last minute error caused the JBU men’s soccer team to fall 0-1 in conference play and 6-4 overall after losing a 2-1 decision to Southern Nazarene.
With just 49 seconds remaining in the game, SNU (3-2-2) had possession on the corner kick. JBU mis-cleared the kick off the corner, and SNU’s Matt Wilkowske took advantage firing a shot from the six into the right corner to give SNU a 2-1 lead with 30 seconds left to play. JBU couldn’t convert as time expired.
In the first half, JBU’s Josh Baldwin scored the first goal for JBU after putting away the slotted ball from Gabriel Duarte in the eight minute of play.
JBU held a 1-0 lead going into break.
SNU came out firing in the second half and scored the equalizer in the 52nd after Mike Bray scored off the assist from Robert Nakaya. Milkowske scored the game winner in the final minute.
For the game, JBU outshot SNU 23-20 with a 13-8 shots-on-goal advantage.
Ryan Helmer picked up six saves in the loss. Kenton Farris tallied 12 saves in the win.
Up next, JBU returns home to face conference foe St. Gregory’s (Okla.) for a homecoming matchup on Saturday at 3 p.m.
