Volleyball picks up two in Tex Wes Tourney
Fort Worth, Texas (September 18, 2009) — JBU volleyball added a few notches to the win column on Friday after defeating Belhaven (Miss.) and Texas Wesleyan in day one of the Texas Wesleyan Volleyball Classic.
In the morning match, the ladies defeated Belhaven 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-16), and in the afternoon bout, JBU went the distance against tournament host Texas Wesleyan defeating them in five (25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-12). The ladies move to 11-1 overall.
Against Belhaven (7-6), junior Amber Wilson paced JBU with eight kills followed by freshman Erin Didier and senior Christi Newton with seven each. Senior Britney Kerns had 13 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Shannon Proctor picked up 12 digs. Wilson had three blocks.
TWU (4-7) came ready to protect their home court later in the day. But a triple-threat attack of Didier, Wilson, and Newton proved too much for TWU as the Golden Eagle trio picked up 14, 13, and 13 kills respectively. Kerns totaled 37 assists for the match, and her counterpart junior Alyssa Hanson added 36.
Proctor had her work cut out for her on defense, but she was up to task picking up 31 digs while Newton earned six blocks.
The ladies return to action on Saturday against Ozarks (Mo.) at 11 a.m. and Mary Hardin Baylor (Texas) at 5 p.m. In their season opener, JBU defeated Ozarks 3-1.
