Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 11, 2009) - The JBU men’s soccer team picked up their fourth win of the year after defeating Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) 4-1 on day one of the 27th Annual JBU Fall Classic.
JBU (4-0) set the tempo early and showed their form after freshman Cristobal Duran scored 1:41 into the contest off the double assist from junior Juan Iraola and freshman David Castagne.
TNU (0-2-1) sharpened up on defense and limited the JBU touches throughout the half, but a breakdown in the 41st minute allowed senior Carlos Mojica to get within striking distance. Mojica took a pass from senior Akeem Grant just outside and box and blasted a high shot over TNU’s keeper Hayden Coffman's outstretched hand for the 2-0 JBU lead heading into intermission.
TNU struck first in the second half after Philip Walker broke free in the box to score unassisted in the 70th minute.
The Golden Eagles responded quickly on the other end after junior Gabriel Duarte followed up a Grant miss to score off the rebound in the 76th minute.
In the 84th minute, the final nail was hammered down when sophomore Josh Baldwin’s shot deflected off a TNU player for an own goal.
The men won’t have long to celebrate the victory as they return to the field for day two of the classic on Saturday. In the early game, Oklahoma City will take on Trevecca Nazarene at 12:30 and JBU kicks off at 3 p.m. versus Illinois Institute of Technology. On Friday, OCU defeated IIT 3-2.
