Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 28, 2009) - Both JBU men’s and women’s soccer teams were in action on Friday afternoon against Bacone (Okla.). In the early game, JBU’s women (1-0) cruised by Bacone 11-0, and in the men’s game, the Golden Eagles battled to a 2-0 victory.
In ladies action, JBU set the tempo early as sophomore Amanda Reed started the scoring for JBU at the six minute mark with a header off the corner kick by junior Camille Malkiewicz.
From there, JBU was off to the races as they scored six more goals in the first half led by a pair from junior forward Sarah Kidd.
The second half started off much like the first with Malkiewicz scoring in the first minute to put the Lady Golden Eagles up 8-0 en route to the landslide victory.
JBU coach Joe Thoma was happy with the result but knows that they have a long season ahead of them.
“The next ten days should be pretty eventful for us,” said Thoma. “We’ve got to go to California, and then we have a big game in Kansas City. So they should get us ready for conference.”
The Lady Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to California to face Point Loma Nazarene on Friday, Sept. 4.
On the men’s side, JBU (1-0) took an early advantage after junior Gabriel Duarte scored off the penalty kick at the nine minute mark.
It remained notched at 1-0 through the intermission and most of the second half until junior Sasha Viatrov found the back of the net via the assist from freshman Cristobal Duran in the 74th minute for the 2-0 cushion.
Head men’s coach John Miglarese said he’s pleased with a victory but knows the team can play much better.
“It wasn’t as clean as I would have liked. We got too casual and it made the game too hard for us,” said Miglarese. “Hopefully we’ll start the game a little bit better next time and put more pressure on the other team.”
The men return to the field at home on Tuesday, Sept. 1 against Ouchita Baptist (Ark.).
