Columbia, Mo. (December 9, 2008) - The John Brown University women’s basketball team dropped to 7-4 overall after falling 62-73 in non-conference action to No. 17 Columbia (Mo.) on Tuesday night in Missouri.
In the loss, junior Micaela Cully (Mountain Home, Ark.) led JBU with 20 points after going 7-12 (58.3 %) from the floor including 5-7 (71.4%) from long distance. She was the only JBU player in double digits.
JBU jumped out to claim a 12 point lead in the first half but committed 19 first half turnovers helping the Lady Cougars claw their way back into the game. Columbia (9-1) took advantage of JBU's mistakes and took a three point, 27-24, lead into the break.
CC blasted out of the gate in the second half on a 15-2 run to go ahead by 16 points, 42-26, in the opening minutes of the period. Later in the half, the Lady Golden Eagles closed the gap but eventually ran out of steam succumbing to a nine-point defeat.
JBU had a good shooting night going 25-51 for 51 % including 11-19 (57.9%) from beyond the arc. JBU lost the rebounding battle 29-33 and also committed 29 turnovers while only forcing 21 from CC.
A major deficit in the game came at the free-throw line where the Lady Golden Eagles only managed to get to the line six times for the game hitting 2-6 for 33% compared to CC who went 23-31 (74.2 %).
Overall, CC went 23-52 (44.2%) from the floor and 3-14 (21.4%) from three point range. Rachel Oswald led Columbia with 16 points and eight boards.
JBU returns to conference play this Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face Rogers State (Okla.) at home. Earlier this year, JBU defeated RSU 68-50 in Claremore.
