Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 8, 2008) - Three John Brown University athletes have earned post season honors for their play this year in their respective sports. Women’s soccer player senior Rachel Gerdin (Colorado Springs) earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors while volleyball players junior Christi Newton (Colorado Springs) and sophomore Amber Wilson (Diamond Bar, Calif.) were named to the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) NAIA Mid South Region Team.
Gerdin helped guide JBU to a 12-5-1 overall record this year and a third place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season standings with an 8-1-1 record. She tallied 13 points on the year after playing in 17 games and had a career high four goals against Mid America Christian earlier in the season.
Newton and Wilson piloted a JBU squad that made it all the way to the SAC championship game before closing out their season with a 21-11 record overall and 10-4 record in conference play.
Wilson led the team with 304 kills (2.6 kpg) on the year while hitting .293. She also was second in service aces with 43 and third in blocks with 88.
Newton was fourth in kills totaling 260 (2.3 kpg) with a .283 hitting percentage on the year. She also led the squad with 153 blocks (1.4 bpg).
