Bethany, Okla. (November 10, 2008) - The JBU men’s soccer team finished the season 8-9-1 overall after falling in semifinal action to the No. 2 seed and 24th ranked Southern Nazarene (Okla.) Crimson Storm during the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on Monday afternoon.
SNU (12-4-1) scored in the 26th minute off a Mike Bray to Thierry Gakire hookup. JBU responded quickly in the 27th minute after senior defender Terry Andrew tied things up via the pass from Hunter Bradford.
It remained deadlocked until the 60th minute when Damian Gunaratne scored unassisted to give SNU the lead en route to the 2-1 win.
The Golden Eagles tried to respond in the final thirty minutes but came up empty as time expired.
Overall, SNU outshot JBU 18-10 with a 7-4 shot on goal differential. Senior keeper Spencer Watson picked five saves in the losing effort. SNU keeper Kenton Farris picked up the win after recording three saves.
Today’s match also ends the storied career of long time head coach Bob Gustavson. Earlier in the season, Gustavson announced his retirement at the conclusion of the school year after 29 years at the helm of Golden Eagle men’s soccer. He ends his career at JBU with a record of 371-273-58.
