Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 28, 2008) - The John Brown University men’s basketball season kicks off this upcoming Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Golden Eagles host Hillsdale Freewill Baptist (Okla.) in the annual Toilet Paper Game in Murray Sells Gymnasium.
In USA Today Sports Weekly College Basketball October-November Edition, the Toilet Paper Game, which started in the early 1980’s, is listed as one of the top fan traditions in college basketball. The list also includes top NCAA Division I programs such as Duke, UCLA, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
During the first home game, fans come armed with over 500 rolls of toilet paper, which they hurl onto the court after the first made field goal by JBU. The team is issued a technical foul, but head coach Clark Sheehy knows it’s worth it to get the season rolling off on the right foot.
“To be mentioned with some of the top programs in the country says a lot about our program and our fans,” said Sheehy. “This is a great rallying point for our campus and community.”
