Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 22, 2008) - The John Brown University women’s volleyball squad returned home 4-1 after defeating Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22) last Thursday night, and after finishing 3-1 at the Hughes-Wesleyan Classic hosted by Texas Wesleyan over the weekend.
Against SAGU, sophomore Christi Newton totaled 12 kills with junior Britney Kerns picking up 19 assists.
Defensively, junior Shannon Proctor collected 20 digs. Meanwhile, Newton and senior Laurae Marty each gathered seven blocks.
On day one of the classic, the women won 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) against Missouri Valley and 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) against Wiley. On day two the women defeated Texas Wesleyan 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 32-30, 25-23) but lost to Faulkner (Ala.) 2-3 (25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 8-15).
In the four matches, sophomore Amber Wilson led the team with 45 kills while hitting .327 percent. She also led the team in service aces. For her play over the weekend, Wilson was named to the All-Tournament team.
In the assist category, sophomore setter Alyssa Hanson earned 79 assists while Kerns had 67.
Defensively, Proctor led the way with 75 digs overall. Meanwhile, Newton gathered 21 blocks.
Up next, the women return to Texas for the start of conference action. They look to take on Lubbock Christian on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wayland Baptist on Saturday at 1 p.m.
