Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 29, 2008) - The John Brown University women’s soccer team fell 0-1 in their season opener to Park University on Friday evening. In a game that was deadlocked for nearly the entire match, Park managed to sneak away with the win over the 20th ranked Lady Golden Eagles.
Early on, the theme of the match was determined as defense ruled the game. Neither team scored in the first half, but in the 64th minute, Park’s Sophie Chapman found an opening in JBU’s defense just outside the box. She dribbled through several defenders before blasting a shot over the head of keeper, Megan Rouse.
A stellar performance from Lady Pirate keeper Monika Stoiber helped hold of the JBU attack as JBU missed several opportunities to tie late in the game.
Head coach Joe Thoma knows his team had the opportunity to win but let one slip away. “This is not the result we wanted,” said Thoma. “We created enough chances to win the game, but we just have to finish and convert.”
The ladies return to the field at home on Monday when they take on No. 18 Bethel (Tenn.) at 2 p.m.
