Del Monte Foods Supports JBU SIFE Students with $5,000 Grant
Siloam Springs, Ark. (July 31, 2008) — Del Monte Foods has given a grant of $5,000 to the JBU SIFE team to help them continue development projects through their international outreach programs. The partnership between Del Monte Foods and SIFE came about after a representative of Del Monte heard about the global impact of the projects developed by the SIFE team at JBU. The initial grant of $5,000 was presented to JBU in 2007. Thanks largely to the success of last year’s project, JBU was awarded a second grant of $5,000 this year. Funds from the 2007 grant were used to start a sewing school in Guatemala, expand a small casket business in Guatemala, launch 15 tortilla businesses and start a computer school in Nicaragua. SIFE teams traveled to these countries to train the new business owners and help implement the business plans. Joe Walenciak, JBU business professor and SIFE advisor said that the SIFE teams plan to utilize the new 2008 grant money in a similar way and that they hope the outcome is even more impactful than last year. “We are excited to have the continued support of Del Monte in our efforts to make the world a better place,” said Walenciak. “Our SIFE students thrive on the opportunity to make such a difference in the lives of people around the world. It is a blessing to have been given funding to make these projects possible again this year. SIFE is an international organization that mobilizes university students around the world to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. SIFE has active clubs more than 1,500 college and university campuses. Over 38,000 students are involved in those clubs and represent more than 47 countries. JBU has been a leading member of SIFE since 1977. In May the JBU SIFE team presented summaries of their many projects at the National USA SIFE Exposition that was held in Chicago. For their work, they were recognized as being in the top eight chapters in the country, at that national competition. Each year since 2003, JBU has placed among the top twelve teams at the national competition. More information on the SIFE organization is available at www.SIFE.org.
