NWA Students to Benefit from KLRC Listener Generosity

Siloam Springs, Ark. (July 18, 2008) — 101.1 FM KLRC has partnered with the Samaritan Community Center in Rogers to provide school supply-filled backpacks to needy Northwest Arkansas children. The “KLRC Cares: Back 2 School” project is a collection drive for school supplies that will be used to fill over 1,500 backpacks. It is estimated that 1 out of every 4 children in Arkansas lives in poverty. Over 30,000 children are currently enrolled in the free/reduced school lunch program in Northwest Arkansas alone. "Times are tough,” said Jen Ryan, KLRC Promotions Director and Morning Show Co-Host. “Families are having to make hard choices, and the price of a backpack and all of the things children need to start school is sometimes more than the budget can handle. Our goal is to help students be able to start school with the supplies they need to have a good year." The Samaritan Community Center currently has 1,500 backpacks that they are hoping to fill with the supplies donated by KLRC listeners. The backpacks were purchased with the help of monetary donations given to the center for the project. The filled backpacks will be distributed at the Samaritan Community Center in Rogers on Aug. 5-6. . Some of the items being collected for the backpacks are pencils, highlighters, pens, binders, scissors, erasers, rulers, crayons, pocket-sized packs of tissues, glue, spiral notebooks and loose-leaf paper. Donations for the backpacks are being accepted at all NWA Marketplace Grill locations until July 25.
