Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 7, 2008) - The John Brown University Speech and Debate team finished their regular season strong, securing a first place overall finish at the Border Wars Tournament held on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas Feb. 1-3. JBU was one of twenty colleges and universities from Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma including Kansas State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Oklahoma, and Washburn University. Leading the team in points was sophomore Rissa Murphy. She finished first in the pentathlon competition, placing in all five or her competitive events including Dramatic Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Program of Oral Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, and Communication Analysis. Also placing in speaking events were Murphy’s partner and junior J.D. Hegenmuhle, sophomore Cecelia Wells in Prose and Program of Oral Interpretation, senior Brad Webber in Extemporaneous Speaking and Communication Analysis, and freshman Amber Wilson in Poetry Interpretation. In Parliamentary Debate, JBU closed out the Novice Division, securing 1st place and 6th place in the event. Contributing members included freshmen James Cooke and partner Anna Carol Brymer, Wilson and freshman partner Scarlett Bush, freshmen Cecelia Wells and partner Kyle Macfarlan, freshman Daniel Fischer and partner junior Jon Erickson, and freshmen Brenna Welch and partner Ari Acevedo. In the Open Division, senior partners Webber and Jamie Stallings reached quarter-finals before falling to a team from Webster University. Also contributing points to the team in the Open Division were Hegenmuhle and junior partner Jenny Felts, as well as partners Murphy and senior Aaron Brenner.
