Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 2, 2008) - John Brown ladies lost a hard fought battle tonight after dropping a 49-46 decision to SAC opponent St. Gregory’s (Okla.) at home on Saturday night.
A low scoring first half saw JBU (7-13, 2-10) take a 17-15 lead into the break. In the second half, JBU took their largest lead at 36-29 with 6:27 remaining. But SGU (4-16, 2-11) rallied to go on a 12-3 run capped off by a Lacey Craig three-pointer to take a 41-39 lead.
JBU reclaimed a 46-45 lead with 52 seconds left in the game after Ashley Taylor converted both freethrows. But a JBU foul with 36 seconds left allowed SGU to go up one, 47-46. JBU had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds but turned the ball over and was forced to foul and send Craig to the line where she sealed the deal by knocking down both freethrows.
Craig finished with five points for St. Gregory’s, while Sunni Hill and Natalie Melendez each finished with 11 points.
Sophomore Micaela Cully led the way for JBU with 14 points. Taylor added 10 to go along with 11 rebounds.
For the game, JBU shot 17-of-53 for 32% while SGU hit 17-of-44 attempts for 39%. Both teams struggled taking care of the ball with JBU committing 24 turnovers to 23 from SGU. JBU lost the rebounding edge 32-28.
The ladies prepare to head on a three game road trip when they travel to Shawnee, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday at 6 p.m., Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas on Thursday at 6 p.m., and Lubbock (Texas) Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.
