Men's Basketball Sneaks by Scots
Batesville, Ark. (November 15, 2007) — Andrius Mikutis’ buzzer beating layup as time expired gave John Brown men’s basketball the 77-76 non-conference win over Lyon (Ark.) in Batesville on Thursday night.
With eight seconds remaining in the game, senior post man Joel Tesis inbounded the ball to Jarrett McGriff. McGriff was forced to get the ball back to Tesis, who drove the length of the floor before getting double-teamed. This left Mikutis alone under the goal. Tesis kicked it down low just in time for Mikutis to put it in for the win.
Tesis finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and most importantly one assist. Mikutis was the second high-man with 16.
John Brown (5-0) played from behind the entire match but always remained in striking distance only trailing by as many as eight at one point.
Although JBU was down 40-37 at halftime, they improved to shooting 63% in the second half to narrow the gap.
Earlier in the season, John Brown defeated Lyon 65-52 at home. But head coach Clark Sheehy knows a win on the road against the Scots in a big accomplishment.
“Lyon is always about twenty points better at home,” said Sheehy. “But our guys hung in there and persevered.”
Lyon (2-2) shot 48% for the game and got 25 points from Jonathan Donaldson.
The Golden Eagles return home on Saturday to face Bacone (Okla.) at 3 p.m.
