Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 11, 2007) - After heading into the locker room down nine at the half, the Lady Golden Eagles regrouped and came away with the 53-50 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State Thursday night.
Senior forward Ashley Wettengel led John Brown (5-9, 2-1) with 21 points, and three rebounds, while Nancy Pierre pitched in with 12. Joanne Cowan led Northwestern Okla. (2-11, 0-4) with 16 points, all of which came in the first half.
With 45 seconds remaining in the game Pierre collected an offensive rebound after a missed Wettengel three-point attempt and was fouled. Pierre would put John Brown up 50-48 after sinking both free-throws. John Brown would force Northwestern to miss and Wettengel would grab the rebound and immediately get fouled. She sank both free-throws to extend the lead to 52-48. With four seconds remaining, Northwestern leading scorer senior Brittany McBride, who sat out most of the game in foul trouble scored to bring them within two points, 52-50. John Brown would get the ball in to Wettengel who once again was fouled and converted 1-of-2 free-throw attempts to give John Brown the 53-50 lead with 1.6 seconds remaining. Northwestern would inbound but be unable to convert the basket.
John Brown’s next conference test will be on the road as they travel to face Science and Arts of Okla. on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
