Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 7, 2006) - A clutch three pointer by Ashley Wettengel with 25 seconds remaining in the game put John Brown ahead by two points. After a Mid-America Christian turnover and two made free-throws from Tara Stephenson, John Brown went on to win 68-64 over Mid-America Christian in their home opener Tuesday night.
In a game that saw numerous lead changes throughout the game, several seniors stepped up and helped John Brown get the win. Seniors Tara Stephenson, Nancy Pierre, and Ashley Wettengel led all scorers with 22, 17, and 12 points respectively.
John Brown went into the half down by one, but came out early to take the 35-34 lead on a pair of Stephenson free-throws. Mid-America would storm back with back to back three pointers by Courtney Sorrels and Laressa McDonald, and would go ahead to take a 40-35 lead at the 18:00 minute mark. At 4:37, Pierre would take a pass from Wettengel that would tie the game at 58. Mid-America’s Stenia Moore would then go ahead and make consecutive baskets that would put Mid-America ahead 62-59 with 2:30 remaining.
Freshman guard, Paige Blackburn would return the favor at the 2:07 mark with a field goal of her own to close the gap to one, but Moore once again worked her way into the basket to extend their lead to three. On the next possession, Stephenson took a pass from Pierre as she drove to the basket for the easy lay in, and John Brown would only be down 63-64.
After a Mid-America turnover, senior guard, Jordyn West would find a wide open Wettengel on a skip pass and she would nail the trey to give John Brown the 66-64 lead. Mid-America went on to commit a turnover with 12 seconds remaining and was forced to foul Stephenson on the lay-up attempt, and she converted both free-throws.
