Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 2, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles women’s basketball team opened its season with a tough 68-49 loss at Langston (Okla.) Thursday night. Freshman guard Paige Blackburn paced the Golden Eagles with 17 points. Senior forward Ashley Wettengel scored 13, and senior forward Jordyn West led the team with 6 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and trailed the Lions 34-14 at halftime. John Brown (0-1) played strongly in the second half, however, reducing its deficit to 11 at one point before fading down the stretch. Langston started off its season 1-0 with the win.
Head coach Jeff Soderquist said, “We came out and played well in the second half and cut it to eleven, but we made mistakes. We played a good team on the road in a good environment. We have a young team, and we have to learn from it.”
The Golden Eagles will play their home opener on Tuesday Nov. 7 at 6:00 against Mid-America Christian (Okla.).
