Golden Eagles Finally Notch Conference Win
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 28, 2006) — With only two games remaining in the season, the John Brown Golden Eagles claimed their first Sooner Athletic Conference victory of the year Saturday 2-1 over St. Gregory’s (Okla.). The win came on John Brown’s Senior Day, the final home match for Justin Cowell, Phillip Davis, Stephen Granberry, Rodrigo Juliao, and Aaron Shaffer.
After a scoreless first half, Diego Molero put the Cavaliers ahead in the 50th minute with a goal assisted by Oscar Zuleta. The Golden Eagles did not equalize until the 72nd minute when sophomore forward Michael Roberts headed a pass from forward Cowell into the net. John Brown then gained the lead in the 85th minute when Cowell drove past several defenders on the end line and put the ball into the left corner of the net.
Neither team dominated offensively as the Cavaliers and the Golden Eagles both attempted 9 shots-on-goal, with two corner kicks by St. Gregory’s (8-9-0, 3-9-0 SAC) and four by John Brown (4-11-2, 1-9-1 SAC). Sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Watson made 8 saves for John Brown, while Mario Lugo made 5 for St. Gregory’s. After the match, head coach Bob Gustavson commented, “I'm so relieved to get a win. We fought hard to tie it up and the seniors all played great games, and it’s good to see the seniors finish out like that. Spencer [Watson] also came up big for us and had some great saves.”
The Golden Eagles will finish their season Tuesday in a 4:00 match at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
