Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 30, 2006) - The John Brown Golden Eagles continued to struggle in Sooner Athletic Conference play, dropping a 1-0 match to St. Gregory’s Saturday in Shawnee, Okla. The final score was not the main story; however, as the two teams combined for 56 fouls, 6 yellow cards, and one red card. The Golden Eagles and the Cavaliers got physical early on, and the first yellow card was handed out to St. Gregory’s midfieler Diego Molero in the 29th minute. St. Gregory’s scored its goal in the 42nd minute, a strike by reserve forward Alejandro Munin that was assisted by Molero. Seconds later, Molero received another yellow card, which automatically earned him a red card and an ejection.
The battle continued into the second half. While John Brown tried to equalize the score, sophomore forward Michael Roberts picked up a yellow card in the 57th minute. Not to be outdone, the Cavaliers’ Alessandro Bianchi collected a card 72nd minute, followed by the Golden Eagles junior defender Terry Andrew in the 77th, and the Cavaliers’ Ivan Muziotti in the 84th. The Cavaliers committed 34 fouls—22 in the second half—to John Brown’s 22.
Amidst the continuous fracas and the modest offensive outputs, the two goalkeepers performed solidly. John Brown sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Watson made 5 saves, and John VanPool of St. Gregory’s (6-5-0, 1-5-0 SAC) claimed the shutout with 7.
John Brown (3-5-2, 0-4-1) will take this week off before next Saturday’s 4:00 homecoming match against Southern Nazarene.
