Women's Soccer Loses Conference Opener
Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 13, 2006) — It was a good day for soccer players surnamed Leonard, but better for Oklahoma City’s Sarah than for John Brown’s Abby. The two accounted for all the scoring as the Stars beat the Golden Eagles 2-1 in both teams’ Sooner Athletic Conference opener Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City (2-1-0, 1-0-0) got on the board early when Sarah Leonard scored in the 10th minute off an assist by Haley McIntosh. McIntosh collected another assist in the 25th minute when she passed to Leonard on a breakaway race against the John Brown defense. Abby Leonard scored her goal unassisted in the 32nd minute from an incredible distance of 40 yards.
The defenses, and the goalkeepers in particular, took it from there. John Brown’s Natalie Wall tallied 12 saves, and Oklahoma City’s Alycia Allenby made 8. Nikki Ganter attempted a 90th-minute equalizer for John Brown, but it was saved by Allenby.
Abby Leonard and Sarah Leonard are not related. Abby hails from Tulsa, while Sarah comes from West Yorkshire, England.
John Brown (0-5-0, 0-1-0) will host Science & Arts (Okla.) at 2:00 on Saturday.
