Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 9, 2006) - John Brown cruised to victory in their second game of the 24th Annual Fall Classic defeating Calumet (Ind.) 5-1. The Golden Eagles set the tone very early in the match when in the 23rd second of the game, sophomore Garrett Horton took a pass in the 6-yard box from senior Rodrigo Juliao and booted it in for the score. Less than three minutes later, senior Justin Cowell blasted in a direct shot from right outside the goalie box giving John Brown the 2-0 lead.
Calumet rallied later in the half when freshman Sean Galloway scored unassisted in the 20th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. This is where it stood at the half.
John Brown increased its lead in the 54th minute when senior Aaron Schaffer’s shot from 40 yards out slipped through the hands of Calumet goalkeeper Chris Labno putting JBU ahead by 2 goals.
Later in the half, sophomore transfer Theo Browne and freshman Nick Robbins put on the finishing touches with one goal each in the 56th and 69th minutes respectively.
The match also saw the return of junior goalkeeper Glen Goodner who was sidelined with a broken hand since early August. Goodner recorded six saves for John Brown.
After the game, John Brown head coach Bob Gustavson commented, “It’s good to have Glen (Goodner) back out there. We wanted to get him the shutout, but it’s always good to get a win.”
John Brown (3-1-0) begins conference play at 4:00 on Wednesday when they visit Oklahoma City.
In game one Saturday, Oklahoma City and Houghton had a defensive battle that ended in a 1-1 tie.
