Siloam Springs, Ark. (June 28, 2006) - John Brown University signed its newest player, soccer goalkeeper Ryan Helmer from Russellville, Ark. He will enter JBU as a freshman for the fall 2006 semester.
“Ryan is a very accomplished goalkeeper who will add depth and strength to our goalkeeping corps. He was named to the 2006 Arkansas AAAAA All-State Soccer Team and the State All-Tournament Team and I know that his outstanding play will continue in college,” said Bob Gustavson, men’s soccer coach. “He is a great student and an outstanding individual who will add a lot to our campus, both on and off the field. We are fortunate to have such a versatile student athlete in our program.”
Helmer, a 2006 honors graduate of Russellville High School, was named to the 2006 Arkansas AAAAA All-State Soccer Team and the 2006 AAAAA State All-Tournament Team. Helmer led his team to the semifinal round of the 2006 state tournament. Helmer’s teammates recognized him as the Most Valuable Defensive Player for RHS and for the last three years he has been awarded letterman.
He also participated in the Arkansas U-18 State 3 v. 3 tournament. In addition to playing for RHS, Helmer also plays club soccer for the Russellville Cyclones where he was named him Mr. Cyclone for his leadership qualities on the field by his coach.
It is evident that Helmer excels in the classroom as well as on the field. He was named a 2006 National Merit Finalist and was awarded the Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship. Helmer received two Cyclone achiever awards for academic work in the classroom.
Helmer is an active member at Fellowship of Christians Church in Russellville serving in various capacities.
