Students Place at Governor’s Cup

Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 17, 2006) — John Brown University’s business teams achieved a second and third place finish, and a first place technology award for undergraduate business plans. The awards were presented in Little Rock, Ark. on Wednesday, April 12 at the sixth annual Donald W. Reynold’s Governor’s Cup for Entrepreneurial Development. The competition is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and the Arkansas Capital Corporation Group. AgSolutions Corp. team made of seniors Shawn Gatton, Meghan Kelly, Melody Masis, and Laura Redmond, received first place for the technology award and placed second overall in presenting their plan for creating “Bio-Energy” pellets from poultry litter and corn that is used as an alternative heating source for poultry houses and large manufacturing facilities. Sabor Latino, comprised of sophomores Seth Hildenbrant, seniors Emily McGuire, Ellie Thoene, and Leidi Urbina, won third place for their proposed Spanish language entertainment center which would include full-screen movies, books, and music. Students involved in the competition gained access to networks of successful entrepreneurs, lenders, and investors from Arkansas. Students have found their future careers in past competitions. Of the 63 business plans submitted for the 2006 competition from four-year institutions around the state, four JBU teams earned their way to be among only 12 semi-finalist teams statewide.
