Siloam Springs, Ark (November 11, 2002) - After a last place finish in Sooner Athletic Conference round robin play, the Golden Eagles came back strong in the SAC tournament with a 5-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian University, a 1-0 win over Oklahoma City University, and a 4-1 defeat of USAO in the tournament finals. This marked the first SAC championship for the Golden Eagles soccer team. In the final game, Andy Korn scored 2 goals to lead JBU to victory. Shane Mark had scored 3 goals in the Oklahoma Christian victory and Seth Hildebrant scored JBU’s only goal in the 1-0 victory over Oklahoma City University.
The tournament victories qualify John Brown for the Region VI soccer tournament that begins Friday, November 15 in Oklahoma City. JBU will face Oklahoma City on Friday at 2:00 pm for its first game of the tourney. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Southern Nazarene University-Northwood game on Saturday for the Region VI championship. JBU has two 1-0 victories over Oklahoma City this season. Oklahoma City will enter the Region tournament as the number 1 seed and JBU will enter as the number 4 seed. The Region VI tournament champion will advance to the NAIA national tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky on November 20-23.
JBU advanced to 12-8 for the season with the victory over USAO.
