Cole Breaks Conference Scoring Record

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 7, 2006) — Brandon Cole of John Brown University improved his already illustrious career by breaking the Sooner Athletic Conference scoring record Saturday night on the home court of the previous record holder. A 3-pointer with 15:12 left in the second half against 20th-ranked Oklahoma Christian pushed Cole past Jarred Merrill’s year-old record of 2,189 points. Cole finished the game with 22 points and established the new record at 2,204.

Cole set the SAC record for 3-pointers last season and still holds it at 489, which also represents the NAIA Division I record. His streak of 120 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer, which ended two weeks ago, is the longest in college basketball history.

The SAC record, however, represents an equally impressive accomplishment. The 28-year-old conference is commonly recognized as the top conference in the NAIA. It has sent teams to the national finals 10 of the last fourteen years, and SAC teams have won the national title six times during that period. John Brown is the most recent SAC team to win the national championship, taking it in 2005 with tournament MVP and All-American Cole leading the way.
