Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 2, 2006) - The 19th-ranked John Brown Golden Eagles were no match for 6th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist, losing their Sooner Athletic Conference opener 70-56 Monday night in Shawnee, Okla. John Brown shot 23% in the first half and 30% in the game, while Oklahoma Baptist shot 60% in the second half and 53% in the game. Tabetha Eaton, last week’s SAC Player of the Week, led the Bison with 21 points. Senior point guard Alicia Baer attempted an uncharacteristic seven 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles, and hit four, scoring 14 points in the game.
John Brown (8-5) led early in the contest, holding the lead until the 13:04 mark of the first half when Eaton hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 11 apiece. Though they would never lead again, the Golden Eagles kept the score close, trailing 32-24 at halftime. In the second half, John Brown’s poor shooting improved a little, while Oklahoma Baptist’s followed a 47.8% first-half performance with a 59.9% performance in the second half. For the game, Oklahoma Baptist out-rebounded John Brown 38-30.
Keely Tolin contributed 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists for the Bison, and Jennifer Jupin added 12 points. The Golden Eagles’ Lesli Fanning scored 11 points, and Kendra McCormick finished with 10.
